Autumn 2007 Curriculum Letter

                                                       14th September 2007

Dear Parents

I hope you have all had a lovely summer holiday and your child has enjoyed their first couple of week’s back.    The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the topics we will be covering this term…

Literacy

Teaching will cover Year 1 and 2 learning objectives from the new Literacy Framework.  This term the children will be exploring a range of genre.  For the first half term the children will be exploring a range of stories and poems with familiar settings and focusing on instructions.  In the second half term the focus will be on traditional stories and poems with patterns.

Numeracy

Teaching will cover Year 1 and 2 learning objectives from the new Maths Framework under the following headingscounting, partitioning and calculating’, ‘securing number facts, understanding shape’, ‘handling data and measures’, ‘calculating, measuring and understanding shape’ and ‘securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Science

The topic for this half term in Science is ‘Health and Growth’. The children will learn that humans and other animals need food and water to stay alive and that taking exercise and eating the right type and amount of food helps humans to keep healthy.  We will be making comparisons and observations between babies, toddlers and other animals and also talking about the hazards and risks in medicines.

In the second half term we will be looking at ‘Grouping and Changing Materials’.  The children will be finding out about how the shapes of objects made from different materials can be changed by some processes, including squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.  Also, they will be exploring and describing the way some everyday materials change when they are heated or cooled.

ICT

The children will be making full use of the computer suite to develop their ICT skills.  The unit of work for this term is ‘Creating Pictures’ which will focus on developing the skills using an ICT graphics package for the children to explore their ideas in different ways and in contrast to traditional methods.  They will also use a wide range of ICT tools and information sources to support their work in other subjects.

Geography

In Geography the topic will be ‘Where in the world is Barnaby Bear?’  This unit will engage children in learning about other places.  We will locate destinations, discuss transport and compare localities.  We will also look at and compare weather in different countries.

History

History will be a focus in the second half term where we will be looking at ‘The Great Fire of London’.   The children will learn about why, when and where the fire broke out and the results of the fire.  We will also talk about how we protect ourselves from fires today.

RE

Our focus this term is ‘Harvest’ and ‘Christmas’ focusing on the importance and value of celebration and looking at artefacts and symbols used in some festivals and celebrations.  We will also look at ‘Why Jesus is important for Christians?

Design and Technology

DT will be a focus in the second half term.  The children will make a textile puppet by marking out, cutting and joining pieces of fabric. Children look at a selection of hand puppets and base their design on their investigations into how the puppets have been made and who they have been designed for. This unit provides a context for work in literacy and offers an opportunity for children to make up their own play or to retell a familiar story using their puppets.

Art

In Art and Design the topic is ‘Self Portraits’.  The children will be recording their observations and ideas using a variety of methods, including photography and collage.  They will look at the work of artists, such as Matisse and Picasso’ and comment on their work, using their style to create their own versions.

Music

Mrs Crowther will be taking the children for music.  ‘Sounds interesting’ is our topic for this term where children will be extending their ability to identify and explore a variety of sounds.

PE

For the first half term the children will be having dance on Monday afternoons with myself and games on Thursday afternoons with Mrs Crowther.  Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on these days.

Homework

~ ReadingThe reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Please spend a short time each day reading with your child.  Your interest can make a lot of difference to how much your child enjoys reading.

~ Spellings…New spellings will be given every Monday.  Please encourage your child to use the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method when practising their spellings.  We will be looking at the spelling words throughout the week in class so please also revise the words at home, if your child is willing and happy to do so!

~ Numeracy…Numeracy homework will also be given every Friday to be handed in the following Thursday.  This will support and extend work carried out in the classroom. This may be a page taken from the appropriate numeracy homework book, a worksheet or require children to practise learning mental facts.

Even though these subjects have specific topics, as a school, we are developing a cross-curricular approach to learning.  This will give the pupils the opportunity to create work that has a purpose and where subjects have specific links.  ‘Ourselves’ is our topic heading for the first half term and ‘Fire’ after Christmas.

A list is displayed outside the classroom door for anybody who wishes to help in the school, any help is much appreciated.  Please add your name if you would like to help.

I hope this is useful information.  Please do not hesitate to come and see me if you have any other queries.  I will be happy to help.

Miss Kym Evans
